Identified by Marcelline and Bertain as the biggest need for the community on south Idjwi, Mozzo committed it’s C2C Fund contributions for 2020 and 2021 to building the islands first ever maternity and paediatric clinic.
January 2020 saw the start of the clinic build and as part of the project, running water has been established for the first time on Idjwi – the community’s first safe water supply.
In February Grant and Kim from Mozzo visited Idjwi Island to witness the tremendous build progress for themselves, learn about and from the community and visit the farms and homes of some of the RWH Cooperative members. By this point, the elevations for the women’s ward, delivery room, post-natal ward, pharmacy and lab as well as the men's ward (the clinic will also help in the treatment of disease for all the community) were already well underway.
Since then, great headway has been made on the clinic build, with a pause to focus on the coffee harvest. Many of the farmers are also employed to work on the clinic build, it is a real community effort. The progress has been remarkable and with the build nearly complete attentions have been turned to equipping the clinic.
Covid-19 and the sudden lack of demand for coffee has had a real impact on the RWH cooperative as well as Mozzo. Despite the current hardship, Mozzo has committed to finishing the build and operating costs for the clinic for the first year.
Mozzo’s Run For Hope fundraising initiative had to be put on hold due to CV-19, but we will be revealing new plans to help with the operation and future success of the clinic in coming weeks…
